The playground

The Greater Caucasus, from glaciers to vineyards

Ice-capped summits above 5,000 m, green valleys and torrents, high lakes and fortress villages: the Georgian Caucasus has stayed what the Alps were a century ago.

The high northern valleys

The mountain regions at the foot of the Greater Caucasus, their 3,000 m passes and their villages with defence towers. This is where the horses come in, and where the bivouac happens.

The middle valleys

Long descents to the rivers, monasteries on the ridges, shepherds' single track and meadows where we picnic.

Tbilisi and the vineyards

The capital, its sulphur baths and its lanes, then the wine regions to the east: amphora wine, hospitality, the end of the journey.

These are the areas we ride. The trails themselves are discovered on the day.

The horse shuttle

The horses go up, you come down

Where no shuttle can reach, mountain horses take over: they carry the bikes and the luggage to the passes, alongside Georgian horsemen who know every crossing.

On the high stages they can also carry a tired rider. That is what makes the expedition possible, and that is what makes it unforgettable.

  • Bikes and luggage carried by mountain horses, with local horsemen
  • One night bivouacking at altitude, tent and sleeping bag in the carried luggage
  • A guide who scouted the route over two years
  • Designed with safety first: you can step back at any moment on the high stages

When to come

A short window, a long expedition

1

Mid-July · the opening

The last snowfields melt on the passes, the pastures are green and in flower, the horsemen go up with the herds: the first possible dates for a private group.

2

August · the open departure

The safest window at altitude and the longest days: this is our open departure, once a year, over ten days.

3

Early September · the closing

Late-season light, first snow possible up high, harvest in the east: the last dates before the passes close again.

What they say about Georgia

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing. It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

A splendid day! Incredible trails in Upper Valais, perfectly adapted to the group's level, Chris is super friendly and extremely accommodating! (precious mechanical help on this day when my bike didn't feel like working! :D)

Frequently asked questions about Georgia

How do I get to Georgia?

A flight to Tbilisi, at your own cost, with no visa for Swiss and European citizens. Everything else is included: transfers, shuttles, horses, lodging, luggage.

What level do I need?

3.5/4 technical and physical: long days at altitude, some carrying, committing descents. It is our most demanding trip, along with Iran.

What if I do not cope with altitude?

The programme is designed with safety first: on the high stages you can step back at any moment and let the horses do the work. Without altitude experience, we advise you before departure.

What kit should I bring?

A serviced enduro bike, and bivouac kit for the night at altitude: a light tent and a sleeping bag. The full list is sent before departure.

Where do we sleep, what do we eat?

The day-by-day, the lodging, the meals included and the kit are detailed on the trip page. In short: guesthouses in the villages, a hotel in Tbilisi, one night under canvas at altitude.

Can I come on an E-Bike?

No, E-Bikes are not possible in Georgia: this trip is ridden on a regular mountain bike. The horses carry the bikes, and batteries do not travel by air.

What insurance do I need?

Mountain biking accident cover, rescue and helicopter evacuation valid in Georgia, cancellation and repatriation. REGA membership is a good complement.

How is a trip paid for?

A 30 % deposit at booking, the balance before departure. The flight is yours to book.

Can it be booked privately?

Yes, from five riders, between mid-July and early September.

Shall we?

One expedition, once a year

One open departure every August, ten days, a handful of places. Dates are open several years ahead: pick the one that suits you.
