The stage profiles
The program
Verbier, mountain bike mecca, then the bisses of Nendaz
We meet in the morning in Martigny, at the foot of the valley: bikes and bags go into the Exo'bus, and half an hour later you are in Verbier. E-bike set-up, a battery management briefing, and off we go.
Verbier is a name that makes mountain bikers dream the world over: hundreds of kilometres of trails, legendary downhill runs and guides who ride here all year. We gain height to link the best trails of the moment, facing the Grand Combin.
In the afternoon, the mood changes as we join the bisses: irrigation channels the people of the Valais have clung to cliffs since the Middle Ages, sometimes on wooden troughs hanging over the void, to water sun-scorched meadows. Their maintenance paths are now exceptional balcony trails. We finish in Nendaz, the capital of the Valais bisses, and the first evening ends on a terrace.

Over the ridge into Val d'Hérens
The biggest climb of the trip, and the day the journey really turns. A long ascent takes us to the watershed between Nendaz and Val d'Hérens; the motor helps, but the gradient stays proper Swiss. At the top, the view opens onto the glaciers at the head of the valley and the Dent Blanche.
Down we go along an airy ridge, then a long singletrack through arolla and pine forest. A little botany for the road: the arolla pine takes its English name from the village of Arolla, at the very end of this valley.
Val d'Hérens keeps its traditions like nowhere else: the costumes of Evolène, a carnival of carved wooden masks, the earth pyramids of Euseigne sculpted by erosion, and the Hérens queens, black cows that fight every spring to lead the herd. Tonight's hotel has kept all its Alpine soul.

Col de Torrent and Lac de Moiry, the queen stage
The moment everyone waits for. We climb to Col de Torrent, above 2,900 m, the high point of the Haute Route by e-bike. The final switchbacks are sometimes on foot, bike alongside: that is the price of high mountains, and every metre is worth it. At the pass, the Imperial Crown of Val d'Anniviers is revealed: Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Ober Gabelhorn, Dent Blanche.
The descent drops to Lac de Moiry, a reservoir of unreal turquoise beneath its glacier, then on to Grimentz. Here, cellars still hold "glacier wine", a vin de garde handed down through families for generations. For centuries the people of Anniviers lived as semi-nomads, moving up and down the valley with the seasons, from the vineyards of Sierre to the high pastures.
Evening in a historic hotel, the kind of place that makes the Haute Route so special.

From Val d'Anniviers to the Upper Valais
A day of contrasts. It opens with a monumental descent, more than 1,800 m in one go, from the high pastures to the vineyards of the Rhône valley: pure joy if you love linking turns.
Then the Valais switches language. Past the language border, signposts, menus and conversations switch to German. The scenery stays faithful: larches, pastures, and wooden granaries perched on flat stones to keep the mice out. We alternate forest singletrack, flowing sections and a few honest climbs.
The stage ends high above Bürchen, at an alpine lodge at around 2,000 m. Silence, crisp air, the peaks of the Upper Valais straight ahead, and a good night's sleep before the final day.

Through the Mattertal to Zermatt
Final stage, heading up the Mattertal, the valley that leads to Zermatt. The slopes steepen, hamlets cling to the hillside, and above us rises the Dom, 4,545 m, the highest mountain entirely within Switzerland. The Matterhorn stays hidden until the very end.
Climbs, panoramic traverses and playful singletrack follow one another until the bend where it finally appears: 4,478 m, the most famous pyramid in the Alps. It moves everyone, even those who have seen it a thousand times in photos.
We ride into car-free Zermatt, where small electric vehicles have replaced cars. Five stages, 235 km, 11,000 m of climbing: you have just ridden the Swiss Haute Route. Spa, celebration dinner and sunset on the Matterhorn.

Zermatt, a last ride and home
A final morning at the foot of the Matterhorn. Depending on the group's energy and the weather, your guide offers one more ride on the trails around Zermatt, or you can wander through the old village, among centuries-old granaries and mountain guide shops.
Late in the morning we ride down to Täsch, where the Exo'bus is waiting with the luggage. Back in Martigny by early afternoon, your head full of passes, turquoise lakes and 4,000 m peaks.

Good to know
Required level
Five consecutive stages of 45 to 50 km, with 1,700 to 2,700 m of climbing and up to 3,000 m of descent: you need to be comfortable on Alpine trails and have good stamina. Rated 2.5/4 for technique and 2.5/4 for fitness: varied singletrack, sometimes steep or rocky, nothing extreme, and a short push below Col de Torrent. The e-bike makes the climbs easier; on the way down, your riding is what counts, and your guide, a certified instructor, shows you along the way how to handle the trickier sections.
Hotels & food
Five nights in handpicked hotels, double rooms, never dorms: a hotel in Nendaz, a character hotel in Val d'Hérens, a historic hotel in Anniviers, an alpine lodge at 2,000 m above Bürchen and a spa hotel in Zermatt for the last night. Full board from lunch on day 1 to breakfast on day 6, with Valais cooking and packed lunches built for the trail.
Culture
In five days you cross the full cultural width of the Valais: the bisses and pre-ski Verbier, the living traditions of Val d'Hérens, the semi-nomadic life of Anniviers, the switch from French to German, and Zermatt, a farming village turned world capital of mountaineering.
Weather
Mid-August is high summer: warm in the valleys, cool on the ridges, with possible afternoon thunderstorms. Your guide plans early starts to cross the passes in the morning, and the itinerary adapts to the weather. A shell and a warm layer are still essential near 3,000 m.
Safety
A Swiss Cycling certified guide who rides these valleys all year, the Exo'bus following the group with the luggage and a spare bike, and the option to shorten some stages: you ride with a clear mind.

Christian
Chris is a full-time professional mountain bike guide, out on the trails all year, and has been riding the Valais since 1989. Since 2010 he has guided more than 4,000 riders. He still races, too: in 2026 he won the masters category at the Mégavalanche and took second in the e-bike masters.
He is also a certified mountain bike instructor who has coached more than 1,000 riders. On the trail, he shows you the right moves (body position, braking, line choice) exactly where you need them. Unsure about your level? This is the perfect chance to improve, with expert support.
Verbier, Nendaz, Hérens, Anniviers: these valleys are his everyday playground. With Chris, the Haute Route is not a GPS track: it is his Valais, and he takes you across it.

Frequently asked questions
Chamonix to Zermatt or Verbier to Zermatt: which one should I choose?
The Chamonix to Zermatt tour (8 days) adds the start below Mont Blanc and the France-Switzerland border crossing. The Verbier to Zermatt tour (6 days) keeps every big Swiss moment, Col de Torrent included, for riders with less time.
Why start in Verbier?
Because it is home: Verbier is one of Europe's great mountain bike destinations, half an hour from our base in Martigny, and the natural starting point of the Swiss Haute Route.
Where do we meet?
In Martigny, on the morning of day 1. Martigny is on the main Valais railway line, with direct trains from Geneva Airport. The Exo'bus then takes the group and luggage up to Verbier, and brings you back to Martigny on day 6.
Do I need to be an expert?
You need to be a solid rider rather than an expert: 2.5/4 for technique and fitness, varied singletrack with nothing extreme, five days in a row. If you ride regularly in the mountains, you are in the right place, and your guide, a certified instructor, helps you improve along the way.
What is the weather like in mid-August?
Warm in the valleys, cool at altitude, with a risk of afternoon storms. Stages start early to cross the passes in the morning.
Is the departure guaranteed?
Yes: every date published by Exoride is a guaranteed departure, with no minimum number of participants.
Can I bring my own e-bike?
Yes, as long as it is full-suspension, serviced and has a healthy battery. Otherwise, book an enduro e-bike from our fleet in the booking form.
Do I have to carry my luggage?
No: the Exo'bus moves it from hotel to hotel, you only ride with your day pack.
Can I do it on a regular mountain bike?
No: with 11,000 m of climbing in five days, the programme is built for e-bikes.
What insurance do I need?
Accident and health insurance valid in Switzerland, including mountain rescue and repatriation. Cancellation insurance is strongly recommended.
Ready to ride?
Small group, registration open until 3 july. Book your spot.
