Guided MTB enduro shuttle day in the Upper Valais 3/4: the wild valleys, over 5'000 m of descent

Five rotations minimum from Martigny, heading for Moosalp, Jeizinen, Stalden, Turtmann and Gampel: side valleys few riders know, with dry, rocky ground and descents dropping from the alpine pastures all the way to the Rhône. Over 5'000 m of vertical drop, between mule tracks cut into the slope, slabs and larch woods. Advanced level, local guide, zero climbing.

Highlights

  • Over 5'000 m of descent, zero climbing

Five rotations minimum, the van does the work: all you think about is going down.

  • Little-known side valleys

Turtmann, Stalden, Jeizinen: trails the maps keep to themselves and nobody rides without a local.

  • Dry, mineral ground and forest flow

Slabs and loose rock up high, then larch woods where the carpet of needles makes the trail fast and playful.

  • Descents from the summits to the Rhône

Some runs link pasture, forest and vineyards in one go, over 1'500 m in a single drop.

  • The end-of-day beer

We finish the way it should be, around a beer on us before heading back to Martigny.

  • Wild valleys, from the summits to the Rhône

Distance 35 kmClimbing 150 mDescent 5'000 m+Transfer Back to Martigny

An hour's drive from Martigny and the Valais changes face: the villages are called Turtmann, Jeizinen or Bürchen, German replaces French, and the relief narrows into steep side valleys climbing towards the 4'000-metre peaks. That's where, away from the main valley, some of the finest trails in the canton are hiding.

The terrain has its own signature: the Upper Valais is one of the driest corners of the Alps, and you feel it under your tyres. Slabs, loose rock, dust and changing grip call for anticipation and a fine reading of your line. Lower down, the larch woods take over: on the carpet of needles the trail turns fast, supple and playful, and the flow settles in for long sections. Some runs drop in one go from the alpine pastures to the vineyards of the Rhône, over 1'500 m of uninterrupted descent.

Five rotations minimum during the day, with a choice of sectors depending on the season and the conditions: Moosalp and Jeizinen for high-altitude flow, Stalden and Turtmann for committed riding and solitude, Gampel and Visp for the balconies above the valley. Your guide, a Swiss Cycling certified instructor and still an active racer, runs the group smoothly, with regrouping points in the right places, for maximum rhythm.

The day ends the way it should, around a cold beer on us before heading back to Martigny in the Exo'bus.

Required level

These days are graded by level, and this one is rated 3/4: varied alpine singletracks, with sustained gradient, roots and rock, and long fast sections. You need an advanced level, to be at ease on your bike on technical terrain and able to link five long runs in the day.

See the level scale

New to shuttles, or after more flowing trails? Have a look at our level 2/4 shuttle days. If in doubt, write to us before signing up: we'll point you to the right day in two minutes.

Location and times

Meeting in the morning in Martigny, bikes loaded into the Exo'bus, and back to the starting point in the late afternoon. The spot of the day is picked to suit the conditions; the exact place and time are confirmed with the practical details after registration.

Meals

Bring a packed lunch: depending on the spot, there isn't always somewhere to buy food along the way. Bottles can be refilled regularly, and a few snacks never hurt. We meet the Exo'bus at every rotation and for the lunch break.

Climate

The Valais generally offers ideal riding conditions. If the weather is uncertain, the programme adapts and the spots are chosen the day before according to the forecast; if the day looks really bad, it's postponed at no cost to you.

Safety

Small group, professional Swiss Cycling guide who knows every corner of these trails, checked gear, a briefing before every descent, mandatory protection. The guide runs the group smoothly, with regrouping points in the right places: we ride hard, but nobody is left alone.

Ready to ride?

Convinced? If your gear matches the programme, hit the registration button and book your spot: small group, limited places, and they go fast.

Planning to come back several times this season? The Exo'Pass gives you ten shuttle days for the price of eight.

No date suits you, or you'd rather ride just with your group? We also run these days privately, on the date that suits you: request your private day.

  • How many riders per group?

Generally between six and ten riders: enough for the atmosphere, few enough for the rotations to stay smooth and the group to ride together.

  • How do I know if level 3/4 is right for me?

This day is ridden on varied alpine singletracks, with sustained gradient, roots and rock: it takes an advanced level and ease on technical terrain. New to shuttles, or after more flowing trails? Have a look at our level 2/4 shuttle days.

  • Can I come with an e-bike?

Yes, e-bikes are welcome. What matters most: a full-suspension bike, 150 to 180 mm of travel, well serviced, with a charged battery. As the van does the climbing, MTBs and e-bikes ride together without any problem.

  • Can I rent a bike?

Yes, MTB or e-bike rental and protection are offered as options in the registration form. Give us your size, we take care of the rest.

  • I'm planning several days: is there a better rate?

Yes: with the Exo'Pass, you buy ten shuttle days and only pay for eight, so two days are on us. It's valid on all our shuttle days in the Valais, whatever the level, and takes two minutes to activate online.

  • Who is our guide?

A local professional MTB instructor and guide, Swiss Cycling certified, who has been running these shuttle days since 2010 and knows every trail like the back of his hand. He rides with you from the first to the last run, runs the group smoothly for maximum rhythm and gladly shares riding tips.

He is also an active racer, winner of major international enduro mountain bike races in recent seasons: you're in good hands.

  • What's the typical participant profile?

Riders aged 20 to 65, men and women, with very varied profiles. What matters: having the technical level required for the day and the desire to ride hard in good company.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

At least five long runs and over 5'000 m of vertical drop, on routes made up of 99 % trails: long fast forest sections, banked corners and more technical passages, with a spot chosen to suit the day's conditions.

  • Do I ride all day with all my gear?

No: we meet the Exo'bus at every rotation and for the lunch break, so you can leave your packed lunch and the non-essentials in it and ride with the minimum, protection included.

  • What if I get tired during the day?

You can easily skip a run and rest in the van for one rotation, then set off again with the group on the next one.

  • What gear do I need?

An enduro MTB or e-bike in good condition, 150 to 180 mm of travel, with protection: helmet, knee pads, long-finger gloves, back protector. The full list is in the gear tab.

  • What happens in bad weather?

The spots are chosen the day before according to the forecast, and the Valais often has a dry valley to offer. If the day looks really bad, it's postponed at no cost to you.

  • Can we book a private shuttle day, with or without a guide?

Yes, in both formats. With a guide, you get exactly what makes our open days good: he picks the trails according to the conditions and the group's level, he manages the group dynamic, which really matters when riders don't know each other and don't all have the same level, and he deals with whatever comes up, mechanicals as well as crashes. That's not for the participants to handle.

A guideless option exists, but the experience isn't the same: it's meant above all for locals who already know the trails well, along with the sensitive points on certain paths, slowing down, erosion or conflicts with other users. For everyone else, we recommend the guided day.

    Request your private day

  • What insurance do I need?

Every participant must be covered for accidents, including on a mountain bike, and hold all the cover needed for mountain biking in the mountains: accidents, personal liability, as well as search, rescue and evacuation costs, helicopter included. For participants coming from abroad, the cover must be valid in Switzerland.

Note: some insurers apply special clauses or even exclusions for bike-park and lift-served riding. Check this point with your insurer before signing up.

Christian

Tour leader & C.E.O.

Chris has been organizing MTB shuttles in Valais since 2010, and he's been riding on two wheels since 1989: mountain biking is basically his whole life. A true local who knows the region like the back of his hand and will show you the most beautiful routes around, far from the beaten track.

An enduro enthusiast, Chris also competes alongside his work as a guide. This hands-on racing experience directly feeds into what he brings you on the trail: line choices, trail reading, and technical tips that always hit the mark.

A certified Swiss Cycling instructor, he also drops a few well-placed tips throughout the day to refine your riding, without ever overdoing it: here, the fun of riding always comes first. He always adapts the pace and trail choices to your group, so everyone gets the most out of it.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
I end this week with gratitude, a sense of wonder at the Alps, and the desire to return for more adventures.
