Mountain bike tour in Morocco: the enduro and Berber adventure of the High Atlas

Eight days of enduro mountain biking in the Moroccan High Atlas, between red-earth trails, mule shuttles and Berber villages, mint tea and a night in a shepherd's shelter facing the summits. And to finish: Marrakech, its souk and its legendary square.

Highlights

  • Mule shuttles: your bike rides a mule

The High Atlas muleteers haul your bikes up to the passes: the trip's legendary runs, no hike-a-bike.

  • 200+ km of riding

Red earth, schist, mule trails, full shuttle by 4x4 and Ourika flow trails: seven days of riding.

  • Berber immersion, Marrakech finale

Mule oil press, tea poured from high, night in a sheepfold, Marrakech souk: live Morocco as much as you ride it.

  • Morocco at the table

Honey baghrirs, tagines, skewers and couscous with a local family: every meal is a feast.

  • Zero logistics, 100% riding

Swiss Cycling guide, 4x4 support, mechanics, meals and lodging included: you ride, we handle the rest.

  • Day 1 | Marhaba Marrakech, off to the High Atlas

Distance 10 kmClimbing 0 mDescent 1'100 mOvernight Guesthouse

Marhaba! The moment you land in Marrakech, the red city, the Exoride team takes over: bikes assembled, bike bag stored, and already the vehicles head for the mountains. Two hours later the scenery has flipped: after the bustling souks come the Berber villages of the Amizmiz region, stone and earth houses in a thousand colours, kids calling out an « Azul » in Tamazight, the language of these mountains, and a soothing calm. Your daily routine? Left at the airport. Welcome to the land of the Imazighen, the « free people ».

First tagine simmered over embers, first mint tea, the ritual that comes with every encounter in Morocco, then a warm-up: a first playful descending single, 1'100 m of downhill facing the vast Al Haouz plain. The tone is set.

For the night, an unusual and utterly charming address: a renovated shepherd's shelter, all comfort, with an intimate rooftop where the sun sets over the High Atlas range while the muezzin's call rises from the valley. Tomorrow, you step into village life.

  • Day 2 | Salam Aleykoum, the Amizmiz valley

Distance 35 kmClimbing 400 mDescent 2'100 mOvernight Guesthouse

Fired up by that opener, you fall for baghrirs at breakfast, the Berber « thousand-hole » pancakes cooked that very morning and drizzled with honey, before swinging into the saddle with the zeal of a Berber mounting his mule.

From the guesthouse, a lovely route unrolls the valley, its terraces irrigated by seguias and its authentic villages: you polish your « Salam Aleykoum », and the kids race you, amused to see you dropping down the trails. A timeless stop in one of these villages: a traditional olive oil press, its stone millstone turned by an unflappable mule while green oil trickles from the pressing mats. You taste it on still-warm bread: the real wealth of this trip also happens far from the trails.

A magnificent half-enduro, half-freeride finish then drops you into the heart of a village where you're received like kings: grilled kefta and Berber hospitality, the kind you don't refuse. In the afternoon, shuttle time on a small, deliciously technical trail with the valley as a backdrop. In the evening, a small lodge full of charm, a steaming teapot, and you fall asleep already won over: 35 km, 2'100 m of descent, a day etched for a long time.

  • Day 3 | Full shuttle, 2'400 m of flow before Ouirgane

Distance 35 kmClimbing 200 mDescent 2'400 mOvernight Guesthouse

You're up at dawn, ahead of the rooster and the muezzin: today is full shuttle. Our sturdy 4x4s and their drivers, sons of the valley who know every track and every family, criss-cross the rocky slopes to serve you two long trail descents with more flow than you know what to do with. Your first two days have dialled you in: you now hold every card to play with the terrain and open new lines on these endless trails.

A gourmet stop, of course, at one of our best addresses for typical local cooking: tagine slow-cooked for hours, khobz bread out of the clay oven. Then one last taste of the Amizmiz region before the road climbs, late in the day, towards Ouirgane, our base camp for two days: olive trees, pisé villages and, above, the Toubkal massif, the roof of North Africa.

At the guesthouse, a nice surprise: a pool awaits to soothe your legs before dinner. Day's tally: 2'400 m of descent for 200 m of climbing. And tomorrow, the mules and their muleteers take the stage.

  • Day 4 | Mule shuttles and the legendary schist run

Distance 35 kmClimbing 900 mDescent 2'450 mOvernight Guesthouse

Nearly 15 years of roaming the High Atlas have woven privileged bonds with the locals, and their know-how is what makes today magic. Enter the mule shuttles: the village muleteers haul your bikes up to a high pass while you climb light, on foot, free of the painful hike-a-bike. Here the mule is the 4x4 of the mountains: it carries harvests, wood, sometimes the sick... and today, your bike. 900 m higher, the pass marks the start of the trip's legendary run.

First the art of carving down a virgin slope of fine schist, a surf-like feeling you won't forget. Then a few pedal strokes and a second stretch of trail that brushes perfection, its flow is that good. 2'450 m of descent lower, you end the day grinning ear to ear: a highlight of your riding career, no doubt about it.

Icing on the cake, you ride straight into the guesthouse, where a gargantuan couscous awaits: hand-rolled and steamed, the sharing dish par excellence, the one for Fridays and big occasions, served from a single dish, as it always has been.

  • Day 5 | Asni mule trails, tea with your feet in the water

Distance 35 kmClimbing 400 mDescent 2'100 mOvernight Hotel

Baghrir craving satisfied at breakfast, a quick transfer takes you to the Asni region, at the foot of Toubkal. From the car you already picture yourself freeriding the red-earth slopes lining the road, so surprising is the palette of colours. No worries: the day's two trails leave all the room for your creativity, on century-old mule paths laid down generation after generation to link the villages, and seemingly tailored for mountain biking.

Between the two runs, a stop on a lively terrace to tuck into a few succulent skewers, amid conversations in Tamazight and Arabic. Late in the day, a stop in a craft area: hand-woven carpets, pottery, Berber jewellery, and for those who fancy it, the art of haggling, a game played with a smile and often sealed over a glass of tea, for beautiful pieces far better made than those of the Marrakech souk.

In the evening, a step up in comfort: a lodge that skilfully blends modernity and tradition, and it's with your feet in the pool that you sip your mint tea, the « Berber whisky » as they laughingly call it here. The Ourika valley, the last mountain chapter, takes shape on the horizon.

  • Day 6 | Oukaïmeden, from ski slopes to the Ourika valleys

Distance 35 kmClimbing 450 mDescent 2'250 mOvernight Hotel

Departure on a first-class route from the Oukaïmeden ski resort. Yes, there is a ski resort in Morocco, perched above 2'600 m, one of the highest in Africa, on a plateau also known for its millennia-old rock engravings. The route crosses the colourful Ourika valleys: reliefs in unreal hues from which magnificent villages stand out, clinging to the slopes and still full of life despite their isolation.

At noon, bikes down in one of these villages: a charming traditional family opens its home and treats the table to extraordinary cooking, everyone around the same dish, bread serving as a spoon. At the end of the meal, the tea ceremony by the head of the household, teapot raised high to froth the glasses. Three glasses, says the proverb: the first bitter like life, the second strong like love, the third sweet like death.

In the afternoon, a few pedal strokes to savour this breathtaking landscape, then an incredible zone, part pumptrack, part flow trail, that you fly down at Mach 12. Once again you're stunned by the quality of the trail and, without daring to say it, you're already dreaming of riding it again. Who knows?

  • Day 7 | Last ride, last night in Marrakech

Distance 16 kmClimbing 300 mDescent 1'000 mOvernight Hotel

The week has flown, and here already is the last ride before Marrakech. We leave our royal lodge for a half day of riding, one last taste of the dust of Moroccan trails. After a superb run through a dense forest, a plateau looks familiar: your guide, attentive to your wishes all week, kept a little option up his sleeve to reach the stretch of trail that marked you so much the day before. All that's left is to open the throttle and enjoy this first-class finish.

We meet our friendly drivers again and leave the High Atlas for the urban life of Marrakech. After the hotel, the last evening happens in town: the souk and its spice-scented alleys, then the mythical Jemaa el-Fna square, a UNESCO intangible heritage, where snake charmers, storytellers, Gnaoua musicians and trinket sellers put on the show beneath the Koutoubia minaret. Bslama mountains, hello party.

  • Day 8 | Choukran, Morocco!

Airport transfer Airport transfer according to your flight times

Your Moroccan journey ends, and you're delighted to have discovered the High Atlas from the saddle. Depending on your flight times, our staff takes you to the airport, your head full of schist trails, mules loaded with bikes, freshly pressed olive oil, a rooftop facing the Atlas and tea poured from on high. Choukran, or Tanmirt in Tamazight, the language of your Berber hosts: thank you for these simple, authentic moments of life, for the faces of the muleteer, the Ourika family and the tea master.

Beyond exceptional and varied riding, you leave with magnificent memories, and you're probably only moderately looking forward to seeing your work colleagues again after so much authenticity... but don't worry, that stays between us, promise!

Required level

This trip is for regular riders of intermediate level and up, comfortable on singletrack. Terrain varies but is mostly easy: the 4x4 shuttles and the mules keep the climbing down, and mountain experience counts as much as technique.

We rate this trip 3/4 for technique and 2/4 for fitness: within reach of any well-prepared regular rider. Find out more about our level scale here, and if in doubt, get in touch: we're happy to talk it through.

Culture

Morocco is a land of contrasts: Marrakech lives at a very urban pace, at times close to Western daily life, while the mountains have kept their ancestral Berber traditions. That's where the richness of this trip lies: simply unbeatable hospitality, easy contact with locals, culture shock and love at first sight guaranteed. A smile, a « salam aleykoum » or an « azul » in Tamazight, and a glass of tea accepted are enough to build the bond.

Good to know: the local currency is the dirham (cards accepted in Marrakech and hotels, bring cash for the mountains), one hour behind Switzerland in summer time (same time in winter), a Muslim country (respectful dress in the villages off the bike, shoulders and knees covered; alcohol only in some hotels and restaurants). We're there to guide you throughout the trip.

Lodging & food

You alternate between comfortable guesthouses, more traditional but always impeccable and full of charm (including a night in a renovated shepherd's shelter with a rooftop facing the High Atlas), and charming hotels in the Ourika valley and Marrakech. Bonus: two pools along the way to soothe your legs.

At the table, all meals are included (except the last day in Marrakech): generous Moroccan cooking, tagines, couscous, skewers, morning baghrirs and mint tea, often with local families. Mineral water is provided throughout.

Climate

The trip generally runs from late September to late April, the best time to ride the High Atlas: ideal MTB temperatures by day, but starts and evenings at altitude can be chilly (hence the warm jacket on the gear list). The climate is usually dry, but a short spell of rain is always possible: the programme adapts as needed.

Safety

Morocco is a very safe country, and the High Atlas regions we ride in present no particular risk. Your Swiss Cycling certified Swiss guide has been roaming the region for nearly 15 years, the local team knows every valley, and the support 4x4 is never far away.

Ready to ride?

Convinced? If you're sure of your fitness and skills and your gear matches the programme, hit the registration button and book your spot: departures are guaranteed, groups are limited to 6 to 8 riders, and places go fast.

A doubt, a question? Write to us, we answer quickly.

  • How many riders per group?

To keep logistics flawless and the experience at its best, we limit the group to 6 to 8 riders on open dates. For private trips, up to 10 riders is possible if the group's technical and fitness level is homogeneous.

  • Is departure guaranteed?

Yes, and it's a commitment: every date we open is a guaranteed departure. No « minimum number of participants » clause: if the date is published, the trip runs. Book your flights and your holidays with peace of mind.

  • Who leads this trip?

A professional Swiss MTB guide, Swiss Cycling certified and a High Atlas specialist, who opened this route and has led over 30 groups on this programme. You're in good hands!

  • What's the typical rider profile?

On average 30 to 55 years old: regular riders with good fitness and a taste for real adventure.

  • Is this adventure suitable for women?

Of course: our groups are regularly mixed, and plenty of women riders have enjoyed this destination.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

Mostly rolling terrain, moderate gradients and most of the riding on trails: dry, often smooth, sometimes rockier, but easy to get the hang of. Be comfortable walking a little beside your bike too: on day 4, the mules carry the bikes up to the pass while you climb on foot.

  • Do I ride with all my luggage?

No: during the day you only carry your riding gear. Luggage travels by car with our drivers.

  • What kind of lodging?

Most nights are spent in comfortable guesthouses, plus charming hotels in the Ourika valley and Marrakech. And one unusual night in a renovated shepherd's shelter, with a rooftop facing the High Atlas.

  • Are meals included?

Yes, all meals are included except the last day in Marrakech, where you pick your own table in town. The rest of the trip, we take you to the best local spots for Morocco's most traditional dishes, often with local families. Brace yourself: Moroccan food is a delight!

  • What gear do I need?

Nothing beyond a well-prepared enduro MTB, e-bikes welcome. The full list is under « Your bike » and « Your gear ».

  • Is this trip open to e-bikes?

Yes, e-bikes are very welcome. If you plan to fly in with yours, be aware that flying with an electric bike and its battery is very complicated: some airlines accept the bike, but the battery has to travel separately by road transport. In that case, we can safely receive it in Marrakech. Other options: rent an e-bike in Morocco for the week, or take advantage of the times we drive down to Morocco to transport your e-bike directly. Get in touch to find out more.

  • Can I bring my drone?

No: Morocco strictly forbids the use of drones on its territory, and the authorities carry out very strict checks, starting at customs. Leave it at home.

  • What if I get tired?

The programme was built with safety first. At any time you can rejoin our support vehicles or skip a run if you feel tired: the 4x4 is never far away.

  • Can I do laundry during the trip?

Yes, washing and drying are possible mid-week thanks to the hotel's laundry service. Still, plan enough for the whole trip.

  • Do I need a visa for Morocco?

Swiss and EU citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days: a valid passport is enough. Check the requirements for your nationality before departure.

  • How much money do I need?

Very little! The last day's meal is easily paid by card in Marrakech. For the rest, plan the equivalent of about a hundred Swiss francs in dirhams for drinks, souvenirs and crafts along the way: in the mountains, cash is king.

  • What insurance should I plan for Morocco?

No insurance is required to enter Morocco, but we strongly recommend full cover: health and accident abroad, cancellation and repatriation. Check with your insurer that you're covered for mountain biking in Morocco, for accidents as well as cancellation due to force majeure.

If in doubt, talk to your insurer before signing up.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
