Mountain bike tour in Georgia: the horse shuttle adventure across the Caucasus

Crossing the Greater Caucasus by mountain bike, past ancient churches, endless glaciers and villages at the end of the world. And to get over the passes, the horse shuttles: your bike travels on horseback.

Highlights

  • Horse shuttles: your bike rides a horse

Caucasian horsemen haul your bikes over passes at 3'300 and 3'500 m: a signature experience, found nowhere else.

  • 200+ km of riding

Ridgelines at 3'000 m, high passes, super flow and enduro singletrack: the great Caucasus traverse, from first turn to last.

  • Tusheti, the edge of the world

A national park only reachable in summer, villages with medieval towers, a bivouac under the stars at 3'000 m: alone in the world.

  • Georgia at the table

Khinkali, khachapuri, qvevri wines: every evening in a family guesthouse turns into a feast.

  • Zero logistics, 100% riding

Swiss Cycling guide, 4x4 support, mechanics, meals and lodging included: you ride, we handle the rest.

  • Day 1 | Gamarjoba Tbilisi!

Distance 20 kmClimbing 0 mDescent 500 mOvernight Hotel

Gamarjoba! That's Georgian for hello, and you'll be saying it a lot. The moment you land in Tbilisi, the team takes over: bikes assembled, and time for a gentle warm-up. Our shuttles lift you onto the heights of the capital for easy first turns, with the old town below, its carved wooden balconies, the Narikala fortress and the domes of the sulphur baths that gave the city its name, « tbili » meaning warm in Georgian.

Legend has it that when God handed out the lands of the world, he gave the Georgians the one he had kept for himself. Tonight, on a free evening in the capital with your first melting khachapuri, you'll start to see why. Overnight at the hotel, on the eve of the great escape into the Caucasus.

  • Day 2 | Into Khevsureti: lakes and summits

Distance 23 kmClimbing 450 mDescent 1'500 mOvernight Guesthouse

This morning we head north! The road climbs in spectacular switchbacks into Khevsureti, land of the Khevsurs, proud highlanders who still wore chain mail and shields into the early 20th century. We settle into our charming guesthouse for a typical meal: welcome to the homeland of khinkali, generous mountain dumplings eaten by hand.

In the afternoon, 40 minutes of 4x4 and finally the first real turns, with a short hike-a-bike warm-up. The scenery sets the tone: high summits, mountain lakes, hanging glaciers and flowered plains laced with winding streams. From today's high point at 2'650 m, take a good look at the pass on the horizon: you'll cross it on day 6. Then the trail flows all the way down to the guesthouse terrace. Dinner and night on site.

  • Day 3 | The Ridge: riding the 3'000 m line

Distance 20 kmClimbing 1'050 mDescent 2'500 mOvernight Guesthouse

Time to shift gears: one of the region's most beautiful high ridges, for a day of challenge and contemplation. After a 40-minute 4x4 transfer, hike-a-bike and pedalling lift you to nearly 3'000 m, under the wings of eagles and vultures, masters of the Caucasian sky.

Up there, mountain biking makes perfect sense: a long, rolling freeride traverse along the spine of a breathtaking crest. Dizzying flanks on either side, a summit ridge a few metres wide under your wheels with plenty of room to ride relaxed, and a 360-degree view that stays with you all day. The rare feeling of riding on the roof of the Caucasus, spectacular yet never sketchy.

In the last quarter of the route comes the big drop: a well-marked trail plunges from 3'000 to 1'400 m, bringing the day's total to 2'500 m of descending. Back by 4x4 to the guesthouse: slow-cooked lobio, bread hot from the traditional oven and mountain cheese, while the day's stories catch fire around the table.

  • Day 4 | Your first Georgian pass

Distance 25 kmClimbing 940 mDescent 1'650 mOvernight Guesthouse

The 4x4 drops us in front of a sweeping panorama over Khevsureti and yesterday's ridge. Ahead of you, a little over 900 m of climbing, pedalling and hike-a-bike, through a wild plain generously in bloom, dotted with ponds mirroring the peaks. Shepherds and caravans have used these pass trails for centuries to link the high valleys of the Caucasus.

At 3'300 m, the reward: your first Georgian pass. Wind, silence, and a new world opening up. On the far side, a flowy trail snakes endlessly toward the Kazbegi region, through ever-changing terrain and breathtaking scenery. Tonight you sleep at the foot of Georgia's most mythical summit.

  • Day 5 | Ancient church and glaciers

Distance 13 kmClimbing 870 mDescent 1'310 mOvernight Guesthouse

A quick 4x4 transfer, then the climb begins, pedalling and carrying, with Mount Kazbek in your sights. Perched high above the glaciers, a centuries-old church watches over the valley: in a country Christian since the 4th century, one of the oldest in the world, nearly every summit has its stone sentinel. And what a summit: legend says Amirani, the Georgian Prometheus, was chained to Kazbek's flanks for bringing fire to mankind.

Picnic at the top, eyes lost between seracs and alpine pastures, then a fast, playful descent before the transfer back to our guesthouse in Khevsureti. A shorter day, perfect for recharging: the trip's two queen stages are just ahead.

  • Day 6 | First horse shuttles, a lunar pass at 3'300 m

Distance 21 kmClimbing 1'100 mDescent 1'550 mOvernight Guesthouse

A big first this morning: the horses enter the stage! To link Khevsureti to the Kazbegi region over a new pass, bikes and bags travel on horseback, Caucasus-style. You discover this ancestral way of moving through the mountains alongside horsemen who read the terrain like no one else, as the caravan climbs steadily higher. At 3'300 m, the reward: the very pass you spotted on day 2, strikingly beautiful, with an end-of-the-world feel.

The descent sets off through a lunar landscape, raw and grandiose: a short run of switchbacks to find your rhythm, then a long stretch of super-flow trail along the valley, framed by massive dark ridges contrasting with the green of the flowered plain. At day's end, transfer by car toward the highlight of the trip, waiting in the days ahead. The Kazbegi chapter closes; Tusheti is calling.

  • Day 7 | Horse shuttles to 3'500 m

Distance 18 kmClimbing 2'050 mDescent 830 mOvernight Tent bivouac

Up before dawn and onto an adventurous 4x4 track, the kind you earn: welcome to the gates of Tusheti, a region so remote it can only be reached a few months a year. Our horsemen and their mounts rejoin us for two days: time for the XXL version of the horse shuttles, the Kachapuride's signature, born of the great riding tradition of these roadless mountains.

The horses take the bikes, and off you go for 2'000 m of climbing through green valleys and plains, to the rhythm of hooves. At the pass, the trip's high point at 3'500 m, contemplation and bike reassembly, then the first runs down toward our base camp perched at 3'000 m. A night under canvas, a sky riddled with stars, grazing horses and murmuring streams: one hundred percent adventure, impossible to forget.

  • Day 8 | Wild Tusheti, alone in the world

Distance 38 kmClimbing 830 mDescent 1'900 mOvernight Guesthouse

Sunrise gilds the summits, and you ride straight out of camp for the longest stage of the trip: 38 km of rolling, descending terrain through deep Tusheti. Rivers to ford, balcony trails, shepherds on the move, horses running free: not a road, not an antenna. Alone in the world. Above the valleys, the medieval schist watchtowers of the Tush villages have stood guard since the Middle Ages.

Late afternoon, first village and reunion with our drivers, then on to a family guesthouse, our home base for two nights. At dinner, a Tushetian feast: khinkali, guda cheese aged the traditional way and bread baked over the fire, served with the generosity that sums up the Georgian soul.

  • Day 9 | Mountain lake and enduro singletrack

Distance 15 kmClimbing 990 mDescent 1'100 mOvernight Guesthouse

Thirty minutes of 4x4, then off for a superb loop on the slopes of Tusheti National Park, one of the wildest protected areas in the Caucasus. Along the way, a crystal-clear mountain lake: a swim for the brave!

Then comes the icing on the cake: an anthology descent on enduro-flavoured singletrack, to be savoured turn after turn. For this last night in the mountains, it's supra time, the traditional Georgian banquet: the tamada, master of toasts, raises his glass to the mountains, to friendship and to passing guests. Gaumarjos! The bravest will try chacha, the local spirit; the others will enjoy the house wine by the carafe.

  • Day 10 | The big descent to Tbilisi

Distance 33 kmClimbing 100 mDescent 2'400 mOvernight Hotel

You don't leave Tusheti without a parting gift: right in the middle of the transfer back, a 33 km descent on a panoramic track, 2'400 m of downhill facing out-of-this-world landscapes. One last chance to fill the memory card.

Then the road rolls on to the capital, and the contrast is delicious: after a week of stone villages and wild passes, Tbilisi welcomes you back with cobbled lanes, carved balconies and generous tables. Tonight is a free evening in the capital: the perfect occasion to toast with qvevri wine, made in buried clay vessels, UNESCO-listed, as Georgia has done for 8'000 years. Night at the hotel, stars still in your eyes.

  • Day 11 | Madloba, Georgia!

Airport transfer Airport transfer according to your flight times

Madloba, thank you in Georgian: probably the word you'll use most as you leave this country. Depending on your flight times, we bring you back to Tbilisi airport, your head full of 3'500 m ridgelines, Kazbek glaciers, Tushetian horses, melting khachapuri and toasts raised to friendship. Georgians say a guest is a gift from God: after 11 days at their side, you'll know it's more than a proverb. What an adventure!

Required level

This trip is for regular riders of intermediate level and up, with good fitness and real endurance. Terrain varies, altitude can dull your reflexes, and mountain experience counts as much as technique.

We rate this trip 3.5/4: demanding, yet within reach of any well-prepared regular rider. Find out more about our level scale here, and if in doubt, get in touch: we're happy to talk it through.

Culture

Georgia is still a hidden gem for mountain biking, and that's a blessing: warm welcomes, generous hosts and friendships built over years of trips. Few Georgians speak English, but a smile, a « gamarjoba » and a raised glass usually do the trick.

Good to know: the local currency is the lari (cards accepted in town, bring cash for the mountains), the time difference is +2 h from Switzerland in summer, and Georgia is an Orthodox Christian country (covered shoulders when visiting churches). We're there to guide you throughout the trip.

Lodging & food

Outside Tbilisi (hotel), you sleep in comfortable family-run guesthouses, including two nights with the same family in Tusheti. And one exceptional night: a tent bivouac at 3'000 m, in the heart of the Caucasus.

At the table, all meals are included (except the first and last day in Tbilisi): generous Georgian cooking, khinkali, khachapuri, farm produce and traditional feasts. Mineral water is provided throughout.

Climate

Early August is Georgia at its best: expect 20 to 25 degrees during the day in the valleys. At altitude, evenings and the bivouac night are chilly (hence the sleeping bag and warm layers on the gear list), and a summer storm is always possible in the mountains: the programme adapts as needed.

Safety

The route runs exclusively through stable, safe regions, far from the country's sensitive areas. Your Swiss Cycling certified guide monitors the situation continuously, the local team knows every valley, and the support 4x4 is never far away.

The only thing that needs a little attention: local driving, occasionally creative. Our professional drivers take care of it.

Ready to ride?

Convinced? If you're sure of your fitness and skills and your gear matches the programme, hit the registration button and book your spot: departures are guaranteed, groups are limited to 6 to 8 riders, and places go fast.

A doubt, a question? Write to us, we answer quickly.

  • How many riders per group?

To keep logistics flawless and the experience at its best, we limit the group to 6 to 8 riders.

  • Is departure guaranteed?

Yes, and it's a commitment: every date we open is a guaranteed departure. No « minimum number of participants » clause: if the date is published, the trip runs. Book your flights and your holidays with peace of mind.

  • Who leads this trip?

A professional Swiss MTB guide, Swiss Cycling certified and a Caucasus specialist. You're in good hands!

  • What's the typical rider profile?

On average 30 to 55 years old: regular riders with good fitness and a taste for real adventure.

  • Is this adventure suitable for women?

Of course: our groups are regularly mixed, and the adventure is the same for everyone.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

Alpine-style terrain, very moderate exposure and most of the riding on trails. Be comfortable carrying your bike on your back too: hike-a-bike opens the trip's finest passes.

  • Do I ride with all my luggage?

No: during the day you only carry your riding gear. Luggage travels by car with our drivers, or on horseback during the traverses.

  • What kind of lodging?

Most nights in comfortable guesthouses, plus a hotel in Tbilisi at the start and end. And one unforgettable night in a tent, under the stars, around the bivouac.

  • Are meals included?

Yes, all meals are included except the first and last day in Tbilisi, where you pick your own table in the capital. The rest of the trip, we take you to the best local spots for Georgia's most traditional dishes. Brace yourself: Georgian food is a delight!

  • What gear do I need?

Nothing beyond a well-prepared enduro MTB. For the bivouac, tents are provided: you only bring your sleeping bag. The full list is under « Your bike » and « Your gear ».

  • What if I get tired or struggle with altitude?

The programme was built with safety first. On high-altitude stages you can hop on a horse at any time if the hike gets long, and if altitude is new to you, we'll advise and look after you.

  • Can I do laundry during the trip?

Yes, washing and drying are possible mid-week. Still, plan enough for the whole week.

  • Do I need a visa for Georgia?

Swiss and EU citizens don't need a visa for stays under one year: a valid passport is enough. Check the requirements for your nationality before departure.

  • How much money do I need?

Very little! First and last day meals are easily paid by card in Tbilisi. For the rest, plan the equivalent of about a hundred Swiss francs in lari for drinks and souvenirs along the way: in the mountains, cash is king.

  • What insurance is mandatory for Georgia?

Since January 1, 2026, Georgia requires every visitor to carry health and accident insurance covering at least 30'000 GEL (about EUR 10'000), valid for the entire stay and explicitly naming Georgia. Bring a clear certificate in English, paper or digital: it can be requested at boarding or at the border. Foreign insurers are accepted, just make sure your policy meets these criteria.

Beyond this legal requirement, we recommend full cover including cancellation and repatriation. If in doubt, talk to your insurer before signing up.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
