MTB enduro trip in Iran: 10 days in the north of the country, from Damavand to the Caspian Sea

Discovery of Northern Iran

An MTB journey far off the beaten track, between personal challenge and cultural immersion: Iran's highest summit at 5'670 m, the highest volcano in Asia, trails shuttled on the backs of mules, a night in a mountain refuge, local cuisine and the discovery of Tehran. Ten days in northern Iran, with local guides and Exoride leadership.

Highlights

  • Iran's highest summit, 5'670 m

Damavand, the highest volcano in Asia, the standout objective of the trip, with ascent permits included.

  • A unique variety of trails

From volcanic ground to Caspian forests, every day changes colour and mood.

  • Your bike shuttled by mules

Where no vehicle can go, mules take over: the Persian version of a shuttle.

  • A night in a mountain refuge

Sleeping at altitude, in the middle of nowhere, one of the strongest memories of the journey.

  • Cultural immersion and local food

All meals included, the Iranian table at every stop, and a day discovering Tehran with a guide.

  • Day 1: welcome to Tehran

    Distance10 km Climbing400 m Descent400 m AccommodationHotel

We meet you at Tehran airport and take you to your hotel, time enough to rebuild your bike and take your first steps into Iranian daily life. Then we leave the buzz of this ten-million-strong capital for the surrounding hills: a first bike check on playful trails, with a sweeping view over the vastness of the city.

In the evening we take you to our favourite spots for a typical meal: zereshk polo or ghormeh sabzi, washed down with a cool doogh.

  • Day 2: Tehran, transfer to Mazandaran

    Distance15 km Climbing0 m Descent1'300 m AccommodationGuest house

An early start for a shuttle up above the capital, with one last view down over Tehran. The descent follows a superb rocky, playful ridge line, with a few good freeride options, down to the outskirts of the city.

Then comes the road transfer, five hours towards more mountainous, rural country. The landscapes shift as we go, and we stop along the way for tea or a koobideh, before reaching the guest house for the night.

  • Day 3: Kelardasht, transfer to the Caspian Sea

    Distance25 km Climbing1'200 m on foot Descent1'400 m AccommodationHotel

Today it's time for our essential mule shuttles. These natural 4x4s take us up a long ascent through a spectacular, wild valley near Kelardasht, to the start of the day's trail at 3'800 m.

A good way to acclimatise, and above all the chance to ride the most technical trail of the trip. A treat: tight, slipping switchbacks, ground that looks hostile at first sight, and yet the flow eventually settles in. The day ends on the road, heading for the Caspian Sea.

  • Day 4: Caspian Sea, transfer to Golestan

    Distance25 km Climbing200 m Descent2'000 m AccommodationHotel

After a generous breakfast of dates and carrot jam, the cars lift us 2'000 m above the sea. The gentler side of the trip awaits up there: a fast, playful singletrack through the forest, dropping all the way back to sea level.

Then a transfer to Golestan, the eastern province where the landscapes change face once again.

  • Day 5: Golestan

    Distance35 km Climbing300 m Descent2'000 m AccommodationHotel

Another vehicle shuttle, saving us nearly 2'000 m of climbing, then a short 300 m push to reach the day's line. The Caspian Sea stays in our sights: it's where we're heading.

In between, the balance is perfect: plenty of flow, a light technical touch, an unusual forest and green meadows, with a fine finish in a fast, playful natural half-pipe.

  • Day 6: Golestan, transfer to Mazandaran

    Distance38 km Climbing200 m Descent4'000 m AccommodationGuest house

It's nearly time to leave this Iranian Riviera, but not without enjoying its green flow one last time. Today it's a double helping: two vehicle rotations for close to 4'000 m of descent in two runs, with drivers putting their pickups to work to make the most of every minute.

At the end of the day, transfer to Mazandaran and a night in a guest house, at the gates of the Damavand massif.

  • Day 7: Damavand, up to the refuge

    Distance13 km Climbing1'200 m on foot AccommodationRefuge

Our faithful mules are back in service for the day's ascent, and not a small one: reaching the base camp refuge at 4'200 m, where we spend the night. We have the whole day to climb steadily, relieved of our bikes and bags, which travel on the mules' backs.

The landscape unfolds as we gain height, with a plunging view over the vast Lar nature reserve: quite simply breathtaking. On arrival at the refuge the altitude makes itself felt, and the sunset over the massif makes you forget the effort.

  • Day 8: Damavand, the big descent

    Distance20 km Climbing100 m Descent2'000 m AccommodationHotel

Depending on your form, your motivation and the weather, you can get up very early for the walk to the summit of Damavand. The route is on foot and remains manageable, but only if you are entirely comfortable with high altitude. Otherwise you stay at the refuge and enjoy the sunrise, which is hardly a consolation prize.

Then we finally get on the bikes for the big descent from base camp: 2'000 m of vertical drop from the highest volcano in Asia, on unique volcanic ground, before reaching the hotel for the night.

  • Day 9: Tehran, culture and history

    AccommodationHotel

Travelling this far isn't only about the trails. Iran has a thousand faces, and Persian history is exceptionally rich. So we devote this day to discovering Tehran, with an excellent English-speaking guide.

He shares the tales of the old kings and the birth of Persia as readily as the country's contemporary history. Between museums, wandering the grand bazaar and street life, it's a real day of travel, not just a stopover before the flight.

  • Day 10: Tehran, end of the trip

We organise your transfer to the airport according to your flight time.

We warmly encourage anyone who can to extend their stay in Iran, as there is so much left to discover. If that's your case, we're happy to help you plan the rest, and we can store your bike and any surplus luggage safely.

Your bike

Ten days of riding far from any workshop: your bike has to be flawless at the start, and you need to be able to fix it yourself.

The bike

  • Full-suspension MTB, 150 to 170 mm of travel, fully serviced, suspension included
  • Mixed-terrain tyres, 2.3" or wider, reinforced casings, set up tubeless with fresh sealant
  • Dropper post
  • New brake pads at the start
  • A bike bag or box for the flight

Spare parts, bring plenty

  • 2 compatible derailleur hangers
  • 2 inner tubes
  • 2 sets of brake pads
  • 1 spare rear derailleur if you have one
  • 1 spare tyre, cables, quick links, tubeless plugs and sealant

Spare parts are hard to find locally: what isn't in your bag, you won't find on the road.

Your gear

On the bike

  • Open-face MTB helmet or helmet with removable chin bar
  • Good-quality sunglasses, the light is strong at altitude
  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Long-finger gloves, two pairs
  • Bike clothing for several days, warm and light
  • Backpack with back protector and hydration bladder

For altitude and the refuge

  • Warm jacket and waterproof windbreaker: above 4'000 m it can freeze, even in September
  • Warm gloves, beanie and buff
  • Sleeping bag liner and night kit for the refuge
  • Head torch
  • High-factor sunscreen and lip balm

Documents and extras

  • Passport valid for six months after your return, and your visa
  • Cash in euros or dollars: foreign bank cards do not work in Iran
  • First-aid kit and personal medication
  • Plug adapter and power bank
  • Covering clothes for visits in town, legs and shoulders covered

Required level

This trip is rated 3.5/4: the descents are long and technical, with high-altitude ground, rock and gradient, over ten consecutive days. You need a solid riding level, good fitness and mountain experience. Altitude also plays its part: several days are spent above 3'000 m.

See the level scale

Flights and arrival

Return flights to Tehran are at the participant's expense, as are airport taxes. We meet you at the airport and handle all transfers on the ground. Send us your flight times as soon as your ticket is booked and we'll organise the pick-up.

Visa and passport

The visa is compulsory and at the participant's expense. We provide the application form and the necessary documents after your registration. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the return date.

Accommodation and meals

Nights in guest houses, a comfortable hotel in Tehran and one night in a mountain refuge. All meals are included, except those on the last day in Tehran, as well as mineral water. Iranian cuisine is part of the journey.

Money on the ground

Foreign bank cards do not work in Iran: bring cash in euros or dollars, to be changed locally. We advise you on how much to bring before departure.

Climate and season

The trip takes place at the end of summer, the best window for these mountains: warm days in the valleys, cool nights at altitude, and possible frost above 4'000 m. The programme is adapted day by day to the conditions.

Ready to go?

Convinced? The group is deliberately small and the trip runs only once a year: hit the registration button and book your spot.

Want to travel with your own group, on another date? We also run this trip privately: send us your request.

A doubt, a question? Write to us, we answer quickly.

  • How many people are there in the group?

A small group, deliberately limited: on this kind of trip it changes everything for logistics, accommodation and atmosphere.

  • Who is our guide?

A professional Swiss Cycling certified MTB guide who has been organising this trip for several years, supported on the ground by Iranian guides who know the ranges and the villages. You ride with people who speak your language and the country's.

  • What is the usual participant profile?

Experienced riders, often in their thirties or forties, drawn as much by the riding as by discovering a country few travellers know. Coming solo is common.

  • Is this adventure suitable for women?

Yes, and women take part regularly. Off the bike, a headscarf is required in public places and clothing covering legs and shoulders is expected in town. Our guides explain all this before departure, and the welcome given to women travellers is generally excellent.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

Long, varied descents, from rocky high-altitude ground to Caspian forests, with loose rock, gradient and sometimes faint trails. The level is rated 3.5/4: riding skill counts, and so does endurance, over ten consecutive days.

  • Do we always ride with all our gear?

No: the 4x4s follow us wherever possible and carry the luggage. You ride with your day pack, except for the refuge night, when you carry what you need to sleep.

  • Can we do laundry during the trip?

Yes, several times during the journey, in the guest houses and at the hotel. No need to pack ten sets of riding kit.

  • What kind of accommodation is there?

Guest houses with local families, a comfortable hotel in Tehran and one night in a mountain refuge. The guest houses are simple and welcoming, and are an important part of the Iranian experience.

  • Are meals included?

Yes, all meals are included, along with mineral water, except for meals on the last day in Tehran and soft drinks and fruit juices. The local food is one of the good memories of the trip.

  • What equipment do I need?

A full-suspension MTB, 150 to 170 mm, fully serviced, new brake pads and a solid set of spares: Western parts are not available locally. The full list is in the gear tab.

  • What if I'm tired or struggle with the altitude?

That's what the 4x4s are for: you can skip a descent or a day and rejoin the group further on. The programme allows for gradual acclimatisation, and the guide keeps a close eye on everyone at altitude.

  • Are the visa and flights included?

No, flights to Tehran, the visa and airport taxes are at the participant's expense. We provide the visa application form and all the necessary documents after registration.

  • What insurance do I need?

Every participant must be covered for accidents, including on a mountain bike, and hold all the cover needed for mountain biking in the mountains: accidents, personal liability, as well as search, rescue, evacuation and repatriation costs from Iran.

Note: many insurers exclude Iran from their cover, or apply special clauses. Check this point carefully with your insurer before signing up, and ask for written confirmation.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
I end this week with gratitude, a sense of wonder at the Alps, and the desire to return for more adventures.
