Transalp E-Bike Valais - Aosta: the great crossing of the Alps, from the Simplon to Mont Blanc

Seven days of e-biking between Switzerland and Italy, 277 km of alpine trails, 13'500 m of climbing and 17'000 m of descent: bisses, passes at 3'000 m, a legendary hotel and perched huts, over into the Aosta Valley facing Mont Blanc. The spirit of the Haute Route, taken further, in a small group.

This 7-day crossing between Switzerland and Italy is designed for expert riders looking for perfect flow, raw technical challenge, and breathtaking panoramas. Prepare your gear; the adventure starts now.

Highlights

  • From the Simplon to Mont Blanc by e-bike

Seven days, 277 km, a border pass at 3'000 m: the crossing of the Alps many thought impossible on an e-bike.

  • Further than the Haute Route

More singletracks, more altitude, more nights up high: the spirit of the classic Haute Route, taken a notch higher.

  • Legendary hotel and sumptuous huts

A night in a Belle Époque gem, two high-mountain huts, an Aosta Valley refuge, a hotel in Courmayeur.

  • The Exo'bus looks after your luggage

Private shuttle for transfers and bags, spare bike on board, batteries recharged at every stage: you ride light.

  • Small group, a guide in his backyard

Small group and a Swiss Cycling certified Swiss guide who rides these trails all year round: exclusive and reassuring.

  • Day 1 | The Simplon legend, an XXL warm-up

Distance 32 kmClimbing 1'150 mDescent 2'300 mOvernight Hotel

Meet in Orsières, load the e-bikes into the Exo'bus, and as soon as you step out of the shuttle the crisp air of the Simplon Pass greets you at 2'000 m. Under the watchful eye of the hospice, founded on Napoleon's orders and run by the canons of the Great St Bernard, you begin your epic where the imperial road once ran between Brig and Domodossola. This Transalp takes the spirit of the classic Haute Route and pushes it further: more singletracks, more altitude, more nights up high, and a small group only.

This first day is a riding treat: you surf trails carpeted with larch needles and follow a historic bisse hanging above a wild valley, one of those irrigation channels the Valaisans have carved into the rock since the Middle Ages. It's flowy, it's beautiful, and it sets the tone: 2'300 m of descent to loosen the legs.

Night at a hotel at the foot of the pass, a briefing on battery management for the week, and a first Valais platter to mark the start.

  • Day 2 | Moosalp and Turtmann, rubbing shoulders with giants

Distance 35 kmClimbing 2'400 mDescent 2'100 mOvernight Legendary hotel

The Exo'bus drops you on the heights of the Moosalp to get to the heart of the matter: today you hunt passes facing the Imperial Crown, those summits above 4'000 m, Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, that guard the Valais. The terrain turns more mineral, the lines more technical, and the motor finally proves its worth on the alpine ramps.

At noon, recovery is taken seriously: Valais platter, dried meat and alpine cheese while the batteries recharge. The afternoon chains a second demanding climb before dropping into the Val d'Anniviers, the valley of glaciers and sun-blackened wooden villages.

In the evening you drop your bags at a legendary hotel, a Belle Époque gem perched at over 2'300 m above the valley, with the crown of 4'000-metre peaks as a backdrop to dinner. A place you don't forget.

  • Day 3 | Singletracks of yesteryear and high alpine riding

Distance 40 kmClimbing 2'200 mDescent 2'600 mOvernight Mountain hut

A royal wake-up facing the glaciers, breakfast wolfed down on the hotel terrace, and you launch onto the dizzying balconies above the Val d'Anniviers, on the trail of the old mule paths. Then pure enduro: a forest descent where the switchbacks follow one another until your head spins.

A cultural stop in the old village of Grimentz with its centuries-old chalets, blackened facades, geraniums at the windows and glacier-wine cellars, then the lifts take you up towards the Corne de Sorebois. The showstopper: a drop-in at nearly 3'000 m above the turquoise waters of Lake Moiry, and a descent that leaves you speechless.

Tonight it's high-mountain hut atmosphere: dormitory, soup, starry sky, authentic and warm. The batteries sleep on the charger, you sleep like a log.

  • Day 4 | Verbier and the 4 Vallées, the mecca of mountain biking

Distance 38 kmClimbing 2'100 mDescent 2'200 mOvernight Sumptuous hut

Heading west via the Val de Nendaz, along the high bisses and the pastures of the Rhône. Today you ride the sacred ground of Swiss mountain biking: the Verbier area, where some of the finest pages of Swiss enduro have been written, from the Verbier E-Bike Festival to Enduro World Series rounds.

Under the gaze of Mont-Fort and Mont-Gelé, you link technical traverses and committed descents. Here, motor management becomes an art to clear the steepest kickers without frying the battery, and the guide shares his settings.

The day ends in style on the terrace of a sumptuous hut perched at over 2'400 m, with the Combins massif on the horizon. Look into the distance: those Italian summits will be your playground tomorrow.

  • Day 5 | The great crossing, benvenuto in Italia

Distance 43 kmClimbing 1'800 mDescent 2'600 mOvernight Aosta Valley refuge

This morning, the sunrise over the Combins massif will stay etched in your memory. The adrenaline goes up a notch with an anthology descent, endless and varied, down to the floor of the Val de Bagnes.

After a short strategic shuttle along the Mauvoisin dam, one of the highest arch dams in the world, we tackle the big one: the climb to nearly 3'000 m to cross the border over a pass known only to smugglers and hikers. You then tip over into the Aosta Valley on wild trails, far from any civilisation, on a line the classic Haute Route doesn't cross.

At the refuge, the mood changes: creamy polenta, fontina, a singing accent and a glass of génépi to celebrate the feat. You've just crossed the Alps on an e-bike.

  • Day 6 | Aosta Valley skyline, facing Mont Blanc

Distance 50 kmClimbing 2'150 mDescent 3'000 mOvernight Hotel

Today you ride on the roof of Europe. This route is a masterclass in alpine mountain biking: a succession of airy ridges where the slightest line error is forbidden, with Mont Blanc as an almost permanent backdrop. The ground is dry, the grip phenomenal, and the 50 km roll by without you noticing the hours.

In the Aosta Valley, a bilingual autonomous region where you're answered in French as readily as in Italian, the alpine pastures are dotted with medieval towers and stone villages. The day ends with a final descent to Courmayeur, mixing fast sections and technical rock-garden passages.

Italian comfort awaits for a well-deserved dolce vita evening: hotel, spritz, fresh pasta and Mont Blanc turning pink at sunset.

  • Day 7 | Val Ferret, the grand finale

Distance 39 kmClimbing 1'780 mDescent 2'350 mOvernight Back to the start

The grand finale: an XXL crossing between Italy and Switzerland in the majestic setting of the Val Ferret, beneath the Grandes Jorasses, that brings you back by the trails to Orsières, your starting point. This last day sums up your week: physical, technical and visually breathtaking, from flow trails to rough passages, you dig into your last reserves.

At the finish you're empty, but above all proud: you've just completed a Transalp that many thought impossible on an e-bike, 277 km, over 13'000 m of climbing and 17'000 m of descent between the Simplon and Mont Blanc: the great crossing of the Alps revisited, higher, longer and more exclusive than the Haute Route. You find your luggage at the starting point, the loop is closed, with a week of images in your head.

Ready to live the Transalp E-Bike Valais - Aosta? Small group, limited places: book yours and come join the elite of alpine crossings.

Required level

This trip is for advanced riders, at ease on technical alpine trails and with real endurance: seven consecutive days of 35 to 50 km, over 2'000 m of climbing and 3'000 m of descent on the big stages, airy ridges and passages where a line error is not allowed. Your e-bike helps you on the climbs, not on the descents.

We rate this trip 3/4 for technique and 3/4 for fitness. Find out more about our level scale here, and if in doubt, get in touch: we're happy to talk it through.

Culture

The Transalp links two worlds that resemble and answer each other: the Valais of bisses, mayens and sun-blackened wooden villages, and the Aosta Valley, an autonomous Italian region where French, Italian and Franco-Provençal are spoken, a land of castles, medieval towers and fontina. Between the two, a border you cross on foot and by bike, like the smugglers of old.

Good to know: Swiss francs in the Valais, euros in the Aosta Valley (cards accepted almost everywhere, some cash for the huts), ID essential for the border, and a « buongiorno » or a « bonjour » opens every door.

Lodging & food

Every night has its own character: a hotel at the foot of the Simplon, a legendary Belle Époque hotel perched at over 2'300 m, a high-mountain hut in a dormitory, a sumptuous hut facing the Combins massif, an Aosta Valley refuge, a comfortable hotel in Courmayeur. Sleeping bag liner for the huts, comfort and showers everywhere else.

Full board from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 7: hut cooking and Valais specialities on the Swiss side, polenta, fontina and fresh pasta on the Italian side. Batteries are recharged at every stage.

Climate

The trip runs in the height of summer, the only window to cross the passes at 3'000 m. Days are hot and dry on the valley floor, cool at altitude, and an afternoon storm or a snowfall on the heights remain possible even in August: windbreaker, warm layer, beanie and gloves are part of the pack. The programme adapts to the weather, safety first.

Safety

Your Swiss Cycling certified Swiss guide is in his backyard between the Valais and the Aosta Valley and rides these trails all year round. The Exo'bus handles transfers and luggage, a spare bike travels with us, and on some days it's possible to shorten the stage and finish in the bus.

Ready to ride?

Convinced? If you're sure of your fitness and skills and your e-bike matches the programme, hit the registration button and book your spot: small group, guaranteed departures, and places go fast.

A doubt, a question? Write to us, we answer quickly.

  • How many riders per group?

A small group: the ideal size for an itinerant crossing, for safety as well as atmosphere.

  • Is departure guaranteed?

Yes, and it's a commitment: every date we open is a guaranteed departure. No « minimum number of participants » clause: if the date is published, the trip runs.

  • Who leads this trip?

A professional Swiss MTB guide, Swiss Cycling certified, who is in his backyard between the Valais and the Aosta Valley and rides there all year round. You're in good hands!

  • What's the typical rider profile?

Riders aged 20 to 65, men and women, with very varied profiles. What matters: the required technical level (3/4), good endurance and the desire to live seven consecutive days of alpine adventure.

  • How does this Transalp differ from the Haute Route?

It takes up its spirit, the crossing of the Valais Alps, and pushes it further: a border pass at 3'000 m to tip over into the Aosta Valley, more singletracks, nights up high in a legendary hotel and high-mountain huts, Mont Blanc as a backdrop and a small group only.

  • What kind of riding should I expect?

Routes made up of 99 % trails, very varied: alpine balconies, switchback forests, airy ridges, rock gardens. Physical, technical and visually breathtaking. Motor and battery management is part of the game, the guide shares his settings.

  • Do I ride with all my luggage?

No: during the day you only carry your riding gear. Luggage and non-essentials travel in the Exo'bus and meet you every evening at the lodging.

  • What if I get tired?

The programme is built with safety first. On some days you can shorten the stage and finish the day in the Exo'bus; but that isn't possible every day, especially on the crossings, where the guide adapts the pace. Good endurance remains essential.

  • What gear do I need?

A full-suspension e-bike with 140 to 180 mm of travel, fully serviced, with a battery in top shape and its charger, plus a sleeping bag liner and a headlamp for the huts: the full list is under « Your e-bike » and « Your gear ».

  • How are the batteries recharged?

Every lodging, huts included, lets you recharge the batteries overnight, and the spare bike travels with us. On the big stages, a second battery or a range extender is strongly recommended, and the guide teaches you to save assistance on the climbs.

  • Can I come with a non-electric MTB?

No: the route is specifically designed for e-bikes, with daily elevation that isn't feasible without assistance over seven consecutive days.

  • Can I do laundry during the trip?

No, the itinerant nature of the programme doesn't allow it: plan clothes for the whole week.

  • Do I need papers to enter Italy?

Yes: ID card or passport, we cross the border on the trails. Also think of your insurance card and a few euros for the Aosta Valley.

  • What insurance should I plan?

No insurance is required, but we strongly recommend full cover: health and accident (including in Italy), cancellation and repatriation. Check with your insurer that you're covered for mountain biking in the mountains.

If in doubt, talk to your insurer before signing up.

Enduro Maroc is top-notch, with impeccable organization, trails that are as challenging as they should be, and long, long, long descents in a magnificent setting. And for the foodies, the food is amazing.

It doesn't feel like an organized tour, but more like you're on the trails you would have chosen with your group of friends, with the shuttle as a bonus. Bravo, Christian!

I spent a week with Christian exploring the Valais region between Orsières and Zermatt.
It was an incredible experience: the mountain biking challenges, the mountain views, the mountain huts for lunch, and the homemade dinners.
Each day, we took a shuttle to a new location and used the lifts as much as possible, then the e-MTB for additional climbs.
He adapted the descents/traverses according to my abilities and desires. He knows the local trails, huts, and access points very well.
I end this week with gratitude, a sense of wonder at the Alps, and the desire to return for more adventures.
