High-Altitude MTB in Valais: When Adventure Calls Right Outside the Office

Let’s be real: at Exoride, we love filling up our passports. We’ve spent years crossing time zones to track down improbable trails at the ends of the earth, blending committed riding with local culture, and crafting bike trips that truly go off the beaten path.

But sometimes, the most epic adventure doesn't require an airport check-in. It just takes looking up from your screen, glancing out the office window, and thinking: "What if I went up there to see for myself?"

That’s exactly what Chris, Exoride’s boss and long-time guide, did during a solo escape last autumn. Destination: the Entremont region, right across from our Exo'base, to pay a visit to the Orny Glacier.

The Orny Glacier: Our (slightly frosty) next-door neighbor

The Grand Saint-Bernard massif is our daily backdrop. We see it every morning. But moving from "the view" to "the action" is a whole different story. Chris decided to treat himself to a wild immersion, alone with his Transition Spire, to remind himself that Valais is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful playgrounds on the planet.

The climb: "Steel calves" mode activated

The plan? A "challenge" climb just the way we like them. Between the sections where you have to mash the pedals and the pure hike-a-bike moments where your bike becomes your best backpack, the elevation is earned through sweat.

But once you're up there, facing the wall of ice, the silence of the high mountains makes you forget every sore muscle. That’s the exact moment you realize adventure is literally at your doorstep.

Flow 4/4 Style: The art of never getting bored

If you know Chris, you know he’s not the type to look for smooth, groomed bike park tracks. What he loves is real alpine mountain biking—the kind rated 4/4 on our technical scale.

This is where it gets interesting. For many, "flow" is a buffed-out sand track with berms. For Chris, this is where the real flow lives.

"To me, a technical trail is the ultimate flow trail. You have to constantly play with the terrain, anticipate the next ledge, unweight the bike over a rock, find your line through the switchbacks... You never just ride the trail; you’re in a constant conversation with it. That’s what real riding is."

On this kind of demanding terrain, there’s always something to do. You’re never passive. This is the approach to MTB we cultivate at Exoride: turning technical difficulty into a fluid, creative game.
